About

A Shakespeare classic, a cast of young actors from the National Youth Theatre and a specially commissioned abridgement from Tom Stoppard come together for a fresh production of The Merchant of Venice at the Ambassador's Theatre.

As austerity and immigration dominate the news agenda the legendary playwright brings Shakespeare’s work into modern day Venice, giving the classic themes of greed, prejudice and justice a newly rendered, highly charged atmosphere.

Austerity isn’t a problem for Portia, a wealthy heiress who is busy looking for a suitor. In his attempts to win her affection Bassanio borrows money from Antonio, who in turn takes a loan from the Jewish moneylender Shylock, one of Shakespeare’s most memorable characters. Old prejudices and racial tensions erupt as Antonio attempts to defer on his debt to Shylock, leading to some of The Bard’s most iconic scenes and a demand for a pound of flesh.

Performed by the National Youth Theatre, this modern version of the classic play will crackle with the youthful energy of social justice in the age of austerity.
