About

Experience a powerful American drama focusing on the timeless themes of class and identity, as The Hairy Ape comes to The Old Vic.

Written by Nobel prize-winner Eugene O’Neill, this brilliantly creative expressionist work follows the exploits of a man called Yank, who works beneath decks on a transatlantic liner.

Famed for being the strongest of all the stokers, he is a proud man who takes comfort in his status. However, his life is set on a whole different course when he is unexpectedly described as a “filthy beast” by the well-to-do daughter of a powerful steel merchant.

Disconcerted, he suddenly views his status in the world in a different light and sets off on a journey through the wealthy neighbourhoods of New York society. Encountering many rich but disenfranchised characters, he finds himself on an intriguing path where nobody’s status quite matches their own view of their place in the grand scheme of things.
