Catch one of Shakespeare’s lesser-known plays, with a ticket to the multi-layered Measure for Measure at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
One of the Bard’s most enigmatic plays, this complex tale of sexual politics and social justice flits between comedic and dark nuances.
Measure for Measure tells the story of a Duke who is appalled at the lack of morals displayed by the people in his city, Vienna. In protest, he announces that he is to play no further role in public life, leaving his deputy, Angelo, behind to continue his work.
In a desperate attempt to apply the full force of the law in every small detail, Angelo becomes increasingly ruthless in his attempts to ban sexual licence. When he ends up sentencing a man to death, the sister of the condemned – a novice nun – tries to arouse the lust of the apparently heartless Angelo.
Addressing ideas of injustice and hypocrisy, this may be one of Shakespeare’s more unrecognised works, but it is as challenging as any of the Bard’s classics.
