Experience the highs and lows of a life growing up in multi-racial Britain as Jane Horrocks stars in East is East, at Trafalgar Studios.
Originally written as a play for the Royal Court, East is East became a global hit for writer Ayub Khan Din when it was remade for the big screen.
Loosely based on the author's life, the story is set around a chip shop in 1970s Salford, Greater Manchester. The Pakistani owner of the shop, Genghis, goes to extreme lengths to ensure his children are brought up as strict Muslims.
There are complications when the children become more integrated with their British surroundings; with the clash of cultures fuelling tensions at home. The English mother tragically finds that her loyalties are divided – should she stand up for freedom of choice for her children or betray the closely held beliefs of her husband?
