Experience a battle of love and sacrifice as Mozart’s sublime early masterpiece Idomeneo is brought to the stage at the Royal Opera House.
Set shortly after the Trojan War, the action follows the trials of Ilia (daughter of the defeated Trojan King) and Prince Idamante (son of the Cretan commander, Idomeneo). When Idomeneo makes a vow with Neptune to save his ship from peril, he sets in motion a chain of events that will result in torment, rejected love and potential sacrifice for those closest to him.
Making his UK debut, director Martin Kušej casts Matthew Polenzani in the title role, while Franco Fagioli, Sophie Bevan and Malin Byström also appear in this production of one of Mozart’s lesser-known works. Marc Minkowski conducts.
