Electra at Old Vic

Film star Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Only God Forgives) takes on Greek tragedy this autumn when she plays the title role in Sophocles' Electra at the Old Vic, in a new version by Frank McGuinness.

The tale revolves around the attempts of Electra, along with her brother Orestes, to avenge the death of her father, Agamemnon - slain by her mother and her lover on his return from Troy.

The show is directed by Ian Rickson - best known for his work on new plays, including the monster international hit show Jerusalem. Rickson approaches the classics as he would a brand new piece of writing, with no old staging traditions attached to it. Hence his controversial recent production of Hamlet, starring Michael Sheen, which relocated the action to a mental asylum.
