The Crucible at Old Vic

Arthur Miller’s modern American masterpiece The Crucible is re-imagined for The Old Vic.

Directed by Yael Farber, whose hard-hitting productions have won her awards and acclaim worldwide, this compelling take on the work is sure to set the standard for future adaptations. Based on the events of the Salem witch trials, Miller’s immortal play is based on his experience of the infamous McCarthy anti-communist investigations of the 1950s.

One solitary man has to struggle and fight to save his identity in a frighteningly repressive Puritan community. The society that he lives in is made up from a lethal mix of superstition, intolerance and lust, creating an uncomfortable situation where individuality is under threat. With the inhabitants on the brink of hysteria, he must tread a fine line to avoid tragedy.
