Skunk Anansie Unplugged at Hackney Empire

Rock quartet Skunk Anansie are touring the UK promoting their album, Wonderlustre. The band was formed by Skin aka Deborah Ann Dyer who provides lead vocals. The rest of the band comes in the form of bassist Cass (aka Richard Keith Lewis), guitarist Ace (aka Martin Ivor Kent) and drummer Mark Richardson. The name of the group is an amalgamation of the names of two creatures, the very real skunk and a spider from Jamaican folklore. This creative and contrasting invention sets a precedent for Skunk Anansie's music which has been laced with controversy since their emergence in 1994 at the height of the Britpop era. Their breakthrough song came bulldozing onto the scene in the form of Little Baby Swastikkka. This was picked up by Radio One and given exclusive airplay. Shortly after in 1995 came the equally controversial Selling Jesus. As well as producing their own music they have collaborated with Bjork and toured with bands including Therapy?, Killing Joke, The Sex Pistols, U2, Lenny Kravitz, Prodigy, Midnight Oil, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Kiss, Paul Weller, Rammstein, Stereophonics, Feeder and Muse. The band continued on a rampage of success until their amicable split in 2001. Rumblings about the group getting back together began in 2008 and in 2009 they began touring together again.
