Overview

See the first comprehensive UK exhibition of Giovanni Battista Moroni’s work at the Royal Academy of Arts.

One of Titian’s contemporaries, and arguably one of the most important artists of the North Italian Renaissance, Moroni is considered by many to be one of the most important portrait painters of all time.

One of his main skills was his ability to capture both exact likenesses along with the character and inner thoughts of his subjects. Covering various members of the Bergamo society in which he lived, his images of regular everyday people are known for their vitality, directness and immediacy.

This exhibition considers his work as a religious painter, along with his more familiar and memorable efforts as a painter of the people.
