Husband and wife duo Sergey and Tatiana Nikitin are hugely popular in Russia. Sergey is a prominent biophysicist and composer, and he and his wife hold iconic status among the singer-songwriters (known as 'bards') who practised their art outside the Soviet establishment. They perform regularly in Russia, in the former Soviet republics, and in other countries with significant Russian-speaking populations. In the sixties, Sergey Nikitin was one of the first bards in Russia to begin setting other poets' lyrics to music - translating the melody already implied in the verse into musical phrases. His method is akin to Mussorgsky's 'Intonational Opera' in which musical lines originate from natural speech patterns. Sergey Nikitin is also known as a composer and performer of songs for children. In 1980, the movie 'Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears' - for which Sergey Nikitin wrote the music - received an Oscar in the 'best foreign film' category. In 1997, Sergey Nikitin was awarded the title of 'Meritorious Artist of Russia' and, together with Tatiana Nikitina, became a laureate of the Tzarsko-Selsky Artistic Prize.
