The timeless brilliance of the Gershwins' Porgy and Bess make the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre an essential destination this summer.
One of the great works of American theatre, this emotional tale of romance and betrayal tells the story of a beggar (Porgy) and the down-on-her-luck Bess. Suffering from physical ailments that have left him crippled, Porgy has the odds stacked against him as he does his best to try and save Bess from her own chaotic way of living. Doing his best to give them both a fresh start in life, his noble plans are threatened by the evils of temptation. With Bess still traumatised by the terrible events of her past, the poignant efforts of Porgy might well be in vein.
The show features a score of some all-time classic songs, with the likes of I Got Plenty of Nothing, I Loves You Porgy and Summertime, evoking powerful emotions as the tragic pair struggle against the odds.
