The colour and dynamism of Bollywood cinema is transposed to the stage in this dazzling dance-spectacular, which will chart the history of the famous film industry, and also of a famous Indian family dynasty, starting with Shantilal Merchant who is a guru of the ancient traditions of the Kathak dance, and his grand-daughter Ayesha, who wants to bring a more western style to Indian culture. Shantilal, previously a choreographer during Inida's golden era of film, now finds Bollywood as far too commercial and too influenced by western socio-economic culture. Ayesha defies him by becoming the go-to choreographer of modern Bollywood. When she finds out that her grandfather is dying, and that the ancient traditions will die with him, Ayesha returns home to both maintain the ancient styles, and also incorporate the new wave. Written and directed by Toby Gough, The Merchants of Bollywood is choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant, whose real-life story forms the basis of the show. Over 40 performers, dancers and musicians come together in this vibrant piece of entertainment, whilst depicting the great culture of "the dance of life". With dialogue in English and a selection of famous Bollywood songs, the show which features Carol Furtado as Ayesha, Arif Zakaria as Shantilal and Dipender Singh as Uday, comes to the UK following an extensive worldwide tour, seen by over two million people. The score is composed by the acclaimed Salim and Sulaiman Merchant. Promising an evening of fun, laughter and sparkle, The Merchants of Bollywood is an enjoyable introduction to this glorious culture, and a journey of pleasure and veneration
