About

The National Theatre plays host to the latest production of taboo-breaking play A Taste of Honey.

Written by Shelagh Delaney in the 1950s when she was just 19, it tells the story of a feisty white teenager whose mother elopes with a car salesman. With her mother absent, she begins a relationship with a black sailor who promises to marry her, before fleeing off to sea and leaving her pregnant. An art student moves in with her and takes the role of surrogate parent, until things go wrong.

Controversial in its day, this is a play that celebrates the strengths and vulnerabilities of the female soul in a harsh world.

This production features a star cast that includes Lesley Sharp (Clocking Off) and Dean Lennox Kelly (Shameless).

Director:
Bijan Sheibani
