Overview

Creating something of a buzz at the St James Theatre is In The Next Room, or The Vibrator Play.

Set to a backdrop of innovation and change in late 19th century New York, a certain Dr Givings has some revolutionary ideas about how electricity can be enhanced in interesting new ways.

Creating an unusual device of his own, he sets out to treat ‘female hysteria’ with his vibrating contraption. He is surprised however when the first patient appears glowing, happy and very keen to return for another session.

Deftly handling provocative themes, Sarah Ruhl’s Tony nominated play manages to be both entertaining and touching in its exploration of sex and intimacy.
