Uproarious and experimental, The Knight of the Burning Pestle is the latest hilarious historic comedy to be performed at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
With the audience expecting to see a gentle comedy of manners, things take an unexpected turn when a dim witted grocer’s apprentice disrupts proceedings with his ambitions to play a knight.
Originally written to be performed at the Blackfriars playhouse, this is one of the earliest – and funniest – examples of a madcap, screwball comedy, using the startlingly original concept of running a play within a play.
With salty colloquial prose and charming songs, the passing centuries have been kind to this evergreen work.
