Overview

John Webster’s macabre tragedy The Duchess of Malfi comes home to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre as part of a season to launch the new indoor performance space, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.

First performed there in the early 17th Century, the current production is the first ever show to play out in the evocative, candlelit atmosphere of the new theatre.

Overseen by the artistic director Dominic Dromgoole and starring the lovely Gemma Arterton in the titular role, the production uses the tricks and techniques that audiences would have been accustomed to more than 400 years ago.

The story of a Duchess who marries beneath her class, what starts as a love story soon becomes something more sinister when violence and horror creep in as her two brothers look to exact revenge in one of the definitive Jacobean tragedies.

Dominic Dromgoole
