Parsifal at the Royal Opera House sees Wagner’s final great work return with a brilliantly inventive new staging. The spiritual masterpiece took Wagner over 25 years to complete and is based on a 13th Century epic poem about an Arthurian knight and his quest for the Holy Grail. A young man, ignorant of pretty much everything, including his own name, arrives at the Kingdom of the Holy Grail where questions are asked as to whether he is the ‘pure fool, enlightened by compassion’. Is he the one who has been prophesied? Does he alone have the power to purify the kingdom? The familiar tale is overseen here by Stephen Langridge, who has put an intriguing and inventive spin on a musical work of genius.
