Pianist Kit Downes studied at both the Purcell School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music before taking up the life of a jazz musician. He formed the trio in 2005 along with bassist Calum Gorlay and James Maddren on drums and the combo perform mainly original compositions but with a strong improvisational flavour. Their influences are varied, encompassing such jazz artists as Keith Jarrett and composer Bela Bartok, plus the folk of Rufus Wainwright. The trio have performed at a number of jazz festivals around the country and also at premier venues such as Ronnie Scott's in London. Downes has won a number of awards, such as the BBC Rising Star Award in 2008 and a Yamaha Jazz Scholarship in 2009. The pianist has also performed with the group Empirical and is a member of the F-IRE Collective of jazz musicians. The trio released their first album, Golden, in November 2009.
