Fashion Rules at Kensington Palace

About

Look through the exquisite and elegant wardrobes of The Queen, Princess Diana and Princess Margaret and discover how royal style has changed since the 1950s.

Fashion Rules at Kensington Palace is a fascinating exploration of how these three royal women adopted fashion trends in their heydays – but always within the "rules" of a royal wardrobe.

See how HM Queen Elizabeth II adopted a nipped-in waist in the 1950s; Princess Margaret stepped out in daring short skirts in the 1960s and 1970s; and Diana, Princess of Wales sparkled in embellishments and shoulder pads in the 1980s.

Laid out over five rooms, the exhibition features 21 couture dresses, plus nostalgic film and photography from each period.

Highlights include:

  • A strapless peach silk Norman Hartnell gown worn by The Queen in the early 1950s, with a typical post-war full skirt and sweetheart neckline
  • A never-before-displayed Dior gown worn by Princess Margaret for The Queen's Silver Jubilee celebrations
  • A midnight blue and purple dress by Jacques Azagury, with an 1980s-style dropped waist, oversize bow and wide shoulders, previously worn by Princess Diana

Entrance to Fashion Rules is included in your Kensington Palace admission ticket.
