BFI Southbank will be celebrating the recent centenary of Nikkatsu, the oldest of Japan’s major film studios, with a season of films and events throughout June 2013, focusing on the company’s heyday in the 1950’s and 1960’s. The selection of films will include Takumi Furukawa’s Season of the Sun (Taiyo no kisetsu) (1956), a story of youth in revolt that heralded the arrival of the so-called “Sun Tribe” movies; Pigs and Battleships (Buta to gunkan) (1961) a controversial Nikkatsu “Borderless Action” film directed by Shohei Imamura; and cult classic Branded to Kill (Koroshi no rakuin) (1967).
