Overview

Grace and her father arrive in Alabama where an old plantation called Manderlay throws up an intriguing dilemma. Slavery is still in force in this small, tight-knit community, many years after the end of the Civil War, and Grace is outraged that feisty matriarch Mam would continue to perpetuate this great injustice. Thus, when Mam passes away, Grace turns this microcosm of life upside down by freeing the blacks and forcing the whites to work as their slaves. The experiment backfires with tragic and bloody consequences.
