Overview

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Sarah Gavron. The village of Niaqornat is nestled in a bay in Northern Greenland, one of the remotest spots on earth. With under 60 inhabitants, dogs outnumber humans by almost two to one. Village at the End of the World illustrates life in Niagornat through intimate portraits of different villagers: the only teenager in the village; the mayor/chief hunter; the oldest female; and a mainland Inuit who moved to the village after meeting his indigenous partner on the web. The closure of a small fish processing factory in Niaqornat results in the loss of the village’s main source of income. Talks on turning the company into a co-op get under way but some – particularly the young – are forced to leave and look for jobs elsewhere. The village’s future starts to appear uncertain when the central government announces these remote communities are not sustainable.
