Side Effects' sees Steven Soderbergh draw heavily from Hitchcock (especially 'Vertigo'). The thriller is set in the world of psychopharmacology as Emily (Rooney Mara) is swept off her feet by handsome Wall Street player Martin (Channing Tatum), but later falls into a deep depression after he is released from a prison term for insider trading. Enter psychiatrist Jonathan Banks (Jude Law) who agrees to see her under the condition she visit him regularly and agrees to a regimen of antidepressants. When the side effects are worse than expected, Jonathan teams up with Victoria Siebert (Catherine Zeta-Jones) to discover the truth. As usual, Soderbergh shoots the film himself under the pseudonym of Peter Andrews and uses a cool blue palette to catch the wintry emotions and tensions that envelop all the story's characters. A mesmerizing ride with plenty of twists and turns.
