Young German pianist Martin Helmchen focuses on music from the heart of the Austro-German tradition, crossing three centuries. He opens with Bach's expansive and generously melodic Fourth Partita, then jumps straight into the very different world of Webern's intensely worked piano masterpiece, the Variations op.27. Two songful Schubert impromptus close the first half, and the second is devoted to Brahms's largest work for solo piano, his Third Piano Sonata, a big-boned, five-movement essay in epic romanticism.
