Imam and I at BFI Southbank
Overview
In his search for identity, documentary director Khalid Shamis returns to Cape Town on the trail of his famous grandfather, the influential 1960s Imam Abdullah Haron, who was both a divisive and a unifying force in the Muslim politics of the time, championing youth, but alienating many with his strong stance against Apartheid. Shamis tries to distinguish fact from fiction in a work that utilises animation, archive, observations and interviews to tell the story of a man and a time that shaped - and shattered - his family.
