In this talk I shall explore a selection of the work of Bernard Malamud (1914-1986). Malamud was an outstanding author in the Jewish American tradition. In his stories he writes with ‘a sureness of touch that rarely fails’. He was especially interested in the immigrant experience and culture, i.e. ‘putting a nervous foot into a new world’. Among many of his quotable quotes are ‘If you ever forget that you are a Jew a gentile will remind you’ and ‘Those who write about life, reflect about life, you see in others who you are’.
