Lucy Whitaker: Death Meets Everyday Life in Bruegel and Heemskerk at The Queen's Gallery - Buckingham Palace
Overview
Lucy Whitaker, senior curator of Paintings, explores two visualisations of death and the everyday. In Pieter Brueghel the Elder's painting 'Massacre of the Innocents', the tragedy is set in an ordinary village in the Netherlands. In Marten van Heemskerk's 'The Four Last Thing's, the last moments of man's life on earth are depicted in a fantastical other world.
