The Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks: Faith without Fear - Writing and Reading Over 22 Years at Kings Place

In August 2013 Lord Sacks retires as Chief Rabbi of the Commonwealth and spiritual head of the largest orthodox synagogue body in Britain. He has held the post with wisdom and authority through turbulent times for Jews and earned world-wide renown for his writing on multi-culturalism, tradition, continuity and belief. In the 22 years of his chief rabbinate, Jews’ sense of their own identity has evolved, with a greater investment in cultural activities that bring them together as a community as well as commitment to religious practice. From the 1990 BBC Reith Lectures to The Home We Build Together, To Heal a Fractured World and recent editions of Sabbath and High Holyday prayerbooks, the Sacks library comprises more more than 25 works of philosophy, commentary and prayer. In this valedictory lecture for Jewish Book Week, Sacks offers a personal reflection on his intellectual legacy, illuminating themes from his writing and a voracious appetite for reading.
