Batman at Prince Charles Cinema
Overview
Burton brought his unique vision to the much-loved DC Comics' character, forever freeing him from the associations of Adam West's camp '60s TV version. While Michael Keaton's casting provoked an initially vitriolic response from fans, his Batman is a dark, brooding, introspective, freakish, psychologically disturbed crime-fighter, inspired, in part, by Frank Miller's seminal comic The Dark Knight Returns, and who in turn influenced a generation of comic-book movies. Reflecting the fractured psyche and duality inherent in the central character, Burton fashions a hellish Gotham City, but the film is notable, ultimately, for Jack Nicholson's show-stealing Joker.
