Overview
Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg's epic musical, which opened at the RSC in Trevor Nunn's masterly production, had been a West End fixture for over 25 years, as well as packing in audiences in the US and Spain, with openings also planned in South Africa, Canada, Japan, Korea, South America and Australia. Now it has spawned this blockbuster movie version from Tom Hooper, director of the hugely successful 'The King's Speech'. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, 'Les Miserables', based on the classic novel by Victor Hugo, tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption - a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Hugh Jackman plays ex-convict Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Russell Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for the daughter of factory worker Fantine (Anne Hathaway), their lives change forever, while in the streets, revolution stirs.
