The View From The Other Side: J-Dilla A European Remembrance + Introduction at Hackney Picturehouse
Overview
James Dewitt Yancey aka Jay Dee aka J-Dilla: the visionary musician, producer and MC’s influence is global. Everyone touched by him and his work has inspiring memories and stories to share. Now the focus turns to Europe. Shernay LaTouche’s documentary 'The View from the Other Side: J-Dilla, A European Remembrance', filmed from 2009 to 2012 in London, Paris, Lausanne and Berlin, celebrates a legend born and bred in Detroit from the European perspective. It discovers underground communities and cultures whose rejoicing in and reaction to J-Dilla’s music, impact and legacy is as intense as ever. Participants and interviewees include Shortee Blitz, Onra, Seb Bash, Lefto, Chief and Frank-N-Dank. All speak of J-Dilla with insight, passion, enthusiasm and love. Yancey’s mother Ma Dukes and his long-time friend Phat Kat also lend their support to the project. The official soundtrack has been inspired by its creators’ favourite producer and includes tracks from Paul 'JukeBoxx' Asante, Mr Thing and Shortee Blitz (The Extended Players), Lefto (Brownwood), Chief (Feelin' Music), Saneyes and many more. The film is introduced by Shortee Blitz. Plus live DJ music.
