Beatrice Behlen: The Huguenots of Spitalfields Festival - From Worm to Wardrobe Wearing Spitalfields Silk at Bishopsgate Institute
Overview
A talk on the Huguenots, members of the Protestant Reformed Church of France during the 16th and 17th centuries. Fleeing religious persecution during the 17th century, the Huguenots fled France relocating to Protestant nations across the world. The large community that settled in Spitalfields left an indelible mark on the area with a major weaving industry producing some of the finest work of the times. To celebrate their talents and contribution, there is a series of events as part of The Huguenots of Spitalfields Festival. How much silk would you need for sack back or a mantua, two of the fashionable dress shapes of the 18th century? Who chooses the silk pattern? How long does it take to weave enough fabric?
