Although coming to prominence at the same time as punk rock, The Jam were never a conventional punk band. Weller and colleagues were more a throwback to the Mod scene of the 1960s even if their music was contemporary to the musical revolution of 1976. Their run of hit singles reflected the working class British culture of the time with their themes of city life, social attitudes and petty violence. After disbanding The Jam, Weller's musical horizons broadened with the formation of The Style Council. Their output was a far cry from the angsty rock of Jam songs like Going Underground with their jazz and soul influences in the smooth tones of My Ever Changing Moods and You're The Best Thing. The Style Council had run its course by 1989 and Weller began his subsequently very successful solo career. A string of albums including the critically acclaimed Wildwood and the chart-topping Stanley Road followed along with a number of tours. Throughout his career Weller has been cited as an influence over other artists. His work with The Jam as well as his solo output is regularly quoted as inspirational to bands such as Arctic Monkeys and Oasis amongst others. Weller has always refused to reform The Jam, despite the many calls for him to do so, although he often performs songs by the band in his live shows. Not a man to stand still, he continues to release material that stretches both him and his numerous fans.
