A String of Rites at Sadler's Wells
Overview
A String of Rites is a series of three events commissioned by Sadler's Wells to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the premiere of legendary Russian composer Igor Stravinsky's masterpiece, The Rite of Spring.
The first in the series is Fabulous Beast (11-13 Apr), an intoxicating double-bill of dance theatre, which honours two of Stravinsky's most famous ballets. Sadler's Wells' newest Associate Artist Michael Keegan-Dolan re-creates his Olivier-nominated version of The Rite of Spring, which won high praise when it premiered at the London Coliseum in 2009. This is followed by a new interpretation of Petrushka, composed by Stravinsky in 1911.
Award-winning dancer/choreographer Akram Khan, who performed during the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, premieres his eagerly-awaited new work iTMOi (28 May-1 Jun) as the second part of the A String of Rites series. Inspired by the work of Stravinsky, iTMOi is an emotive, full-length ensemble piece that explores the human condition.
The last in the event series is RIOT Offspring (8 Jun), a vibrant dance piece with a live orchestra playing Stravinsky's iconic The Rite of Spring.
