Bachelor Mother at BFI Southbank
Overview
Kanin’s best-known film on his topsy-turvy route from director to screenwriter (especially as one half of a husband and wife team with Ruth Gordon). This is one of several screwballs to take place in department stores, as settings for social experiment and the upsetting of respectable applecarts. Here Polly Parrish (Rogers) gets mistaken for an unmarried mother, and the wider world – in an audacious plotline – likes her quite a lot for it.
