Che? (What?) at BFI Southbank
Overview
A delightfully bizarre oddity, Polanski’s least-known film is a light, surreal comedy of sexual manners, with American innocent Nancy (Rome) beset by all manner of Old World depravity and male lunacy at a villa owned by Alex (Mastroianni). A sly, irreverent satire of the wealthy and eccentric at play, the script - by Polanski and long-term collaborator Gérard Brach - revels in modernist narrative trickery; that title tells all.
