The Princess Bride at Prince Charles Cinema
Overview
Written by William Goldman and directed by ‘80s comedy king Rob Reiner, The Princess Bride is a quirky, postmodern fairytale that became an instant cult classic after its release in 1987. A kindly grandfather sits with his grandson and reads him a fairytale that has been passed down through generations. The story-within-a-story revolves around Westley, a lowly stable boy turned pirate who attempts to rescue his childhood sweetheart, Buttercup from an evil prince. With the help of a thief and his band of helpers, including a super strong giant and a master swordsman, Westley embarks upon his quest in the hope of finding his true love and defeating the odious Prince Humperdinck. With enough princes, villains and swordfights to keep the kids entertained, The Princess Bride’s intelligent humour and satirical edge makes it just as big a hit with the grown-ups, too.
