José e Pilar (José and Pilar) + Screen Talk at Cine Lumiere
Overview
The declining years of Portuguese Nobel Prize-winning novelist Jose Saramago are a source of real drama in this compelling behind-the-scenes documentary that won the audience prize at the São Paulo International Film Festival in 2010. Miguel Goncalves followed the writer and his formidable wife, Pilar del Rio, between 2006 and 2008, at their home in Lanzarote and on their international travels, as Saramago completed 'The Elephant’s Journey'. The result, which focuses on Saramago the man rather than the writer, is a witty, multilayered and often moving portrait of an odd couple in love. The screening will be followed by a screen talk with Pilar Del Rio.
