Christoph Vogtherr: Two Paintings for Marie-Antoinette's Bed Chamber in the Chateau of Marly, France, 1781 at The Wallace Collection

Overview

In 1781 the painters Nicolas- Rene Jollain and Hughes Taraval painted allegories of Sleep and Awakening for the Bed Chamber of Marie-Antoinette in Marly. For a long time the two paintings had been mistaken for much earlier works by Boucher or the young Fragonard. Today, they provide an important example for the Queen’s very conservative taste in painting, so different from her more adventurous patronage in the decorative arts.
