Pegasus: Rachmaninov's Vespers by Candlelight at St. Martin-in-the-Fields
Overview
Pegasus is one of London’s leading chamber choirs, with a repertoire embracing sacred and secular music from the Renaissance to the present day. Under its director, Matthew Altham, Pegasus has performed with leading instrumental ensembles, vocal soloists and conductors, as well as with the ballet dancer Carlos Acosta. The choir was a semi-finalist in the BBC Choir of the Year Competition in 2005 and competed in BBC 1’s 'Last Choir Standing'. Pegasus has also achieved recognition in international choral competitions in Spain and Italy, and has appeared on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM and Channel 4. Tonight they perform Rachmaninov's unaccompanied choral masterpiece 'Vespers' - by candlelight at St Martin-in-the-Fields. Written in white-hot intensity in under two weeks in 1915, the work, by a non-religious man, is a rapt meditation on the earthly and heavenly.
