Mavrika at The Clore Ballroom
Overview
Mavrika explores the music of 1930s rembetika, the music of the Greek underworld, the poor and dispossessed. Musicians wrote songs for musicians, in underground dens where they secretly experimented with a hybrid mix of music, fusing influences from Asia Minor and Greece. With singer Katina Kangaris, Chris Morphitis on bouzouki and electric guitar, Jesse Hackett (Elmore Judd) on baglama and keyboards, Louis Hackett (DJ Louis Slippers) on bass and percussion and Alan Pagan on drums. Transferring bouzouki music to electric instruments they create new and exciting colours from these dark, old crackly songs about heartache and getting high.
