Don't Make Waves at BFI Southbank
Overview
Alexander Mackendrick’s only non-Ealing comedy and his least seen film, 'Don’t Make Waves' is adapted from an ineffably Californian novel by Ira Wallach, given a further patina of 60s cool by Terry Southern’s uncredited script doctoring. A slick opportunist (Curtis) arrives in LA, parlays himself into a job selling swimming pools and falls for a bubblehead beach-girl (Tate). Any satirical intent is stymied by the unfocused script, but Mackendrick succeeds in slipping in some telling visual gags - not least the ‘slide area’ climax.
