Blackboard Jungle at BFI Southbank
Overview
Directed by Richard Brooks and starring Glenn Ford and a young Sidney Poitier, 'Blackboard Jungle' addresses' a diverse range of issues, which still prove relevant in contemporary social and educational contexts. A middle-aged, English teacher gains employment at a violent, unruly inner-city school, where despite resistance from staff and students, he is determined to do his job. The teenagers make the rules and the staff meekly accept their own lack of control, until the main character, Richard Dadier attempts to exert his authority.
