This unique course combines teaching creative writing and photographic techniques to students who want to perfect their skills in both disciplines. Additionally it allows students to create a new body of literary and visual work which can take the form of a short story, a piece of dramatic writing, a travel piece about an aspect of London, a work of creative non-fiction, or a short illustrated essay. Increasingly online literary magazines in particular are looking for original work which marries both text and image; in the future hypertext - interactive textual forms - will become increasingly important. Students will receive instruction initially in the classroom and will then be asked to do site-specific work in locations in London to develop their literary and photographic project. Students will gain an improved use of language through a combination of short exercises, the close reading of visual essays, prose fiction and poetry, and through group and tutor-led critiques of their work. This innovative course will ground students in solid creative writing techniques of narrative, character development, setting and description, and will also teach photographic techniques in order to develop an original and compelling body of work.
