Setting the Scene at Tate Modern
Overview
This five-room display brings together works by several contemporary artists, each taking the form of a theatrical, fictional or ‘staged’ presence within the gallery. For several decades, installation art has placed the viewer at the centre of all-encompassing, immersive environments. However, a number of contemporary artists have also begun to explore more contained, tableau-like presentations. Each of these works self-consciously creates a fictitious space, whether domestic, theatrical, social or institutional. Pawel Althamer’s FGF Warsaw is a mobile art gallery created in a spirit of collaboration and exchange.
