Sparrers Can't Sing at Museum of London Docklands
Overview
In this iconic film by Joan Littlewood, Barbara Windsor is the epitome of Cockney resilience as Maggie, a young mum who moves in with bus-driver Bert (George Sewell), while her no-good husband is away at sea. When hubby Charlie (James Booth) returns home, he looks for his errant missus in a London that is changing beyond all recognition - tower-blocks replacing terraces - before his eyes. Featuring a final-reel cameo by none other than the Kray Twins, 'Sparrers Can't Sing' was written by Stephen Lewis - Blakey from 'On the Buses', who also pops up in a minor role - based on his own stage play, and kicks off with a hauntingly bittersweet theme tune warbled in inimitable style by Windsor herself.
