Overview

Discover the art and culture of the powerful Near Eastern dynasties and empires of the last millennium BC. Our main focus will be the Neo-Assyrians, Babylonians, Phoenicians and Persian empires. This module offers an introduction to the art of the Ancient Near East and is designed to develop the themes from the course VB318 Art in the Ancient Near East 2. Here the focus will be on the art and culture of the powerful states and empires of the Near East of the last millennium BC. We will consider the role art and architecture played within the empires of the Neo-Assyrians, Babylonians, the Phoenicians and the Persians. This period covers art in the Near East from c.1000-300BC and will conclude with the arrival of the Macedonians and Romans in this region. The political motivations and royal influence on art and architecture will be examined further as well as the wider influence of the Near East on Egyptian art. This course is designed to follow on from VB318 Art in the Ancient Near East 2 but is also of interest to those new to the subject. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
