English National Opera: Carmen at London Coliseum
Overview
Regularly cited as the world's most popular opera, Carmen is Bizet's tale of seduction in 19th-century Seville. This hugely popular touring production comes to the ENO for the first time, an interpretation in which opera’s traditional touristic trappings are rejected, presenting instead a full-on battle of the sexes, fought out in the near-mythic arena of a symbolic Spanish bullring. Directed by Calixto Bieito, tenor Adam Diegel stars as Don Jose, with vibrant Romanian mezzo-soprano Ruxandra Donose as the gypsy temptress herself.
