I'd not visited the Cabinet War rooms for well over 10 years (maybe many more than that) and boy has it changed. The War Rooms themselves are just as interesting and informative as ever but when you throw in the Churchill Museum you really are making this a lot longer visit than you might have thought. There is a lot to take in and the audio guide was very informative (included with ticket price - I'm a friend of the Imperial War Museum so entry to all their museums are free and I get a discount on the shop and cafes).

While the contents of the rooms have been mainly untouched since they were opened to the public in 1984 you wouldn't know it's been open to the public that long as it doesn't look at all 'worn'. Add that to the new 'swishness' of the Churchill museum, especially with the interactive table and you have a very comprehensive modern museum that is really great to visit.

Worth a trip to London just to see

This was the underground bunker where Churchill and his war cabinet ran the WWII. On the last day of the war, the rooms were locked up and left untouched for 50 years. Everything is as it was on that last day, right down to the pushpins representing troop movements on the map walls. The free audio tour is fascinating. The Churchill Museum also should not be missed. We were so entranced by the War Rooms that we bypassed the Churchill Museum and almost didn't backtrack. What a mistake that would have been! The man was voted the most important Briton in history (think of his competition!) and with good reason. The museum is remarkably hands on. My 13 year old (NOT a history or war buff) was not bored even when his parents wanted to stay a little longer. By far the best museum of our trip (we also visited Shakespeare's Globe, the National Gallery, British Museum, Tower of London, and Royal Observatory). Don't miss!

This site really includes two venues: the actual underground Cabinet War Rooms used during World War II by Churchill and the war-time government and the Churchill Museum. Both are highly recommended. I have rarely been to a museum that was more engaging and made better use of technology, without seeming to "gimmicky". And to see the war rooms, furnished and outfitted as they were during WWII, from which the British oversaw their fight was utterly fascinating. The audio tour commentary was essential! Well-worth the price of admission.

We visited the Cabinet War Rooms with my Nan and Grandad who lived through the second world war so their opinion on this museum i was really interested in and they loved it. It was so interesting and you got a real sense of history. When the war finished the men and women who had been underground in these war rooms literally switched out the lights and they were left undiscovered for many years. I found the main meeting room fascinating with all the papers and maps and a cartoon drawing of Hitler that one of them had done at the time! We spent a whole morning here and it was really enjoyed by us all. We found the audio commentary really good so you could just go round at your own pace and we booked tickets online too which meant we just went straight to another desk and we didnt have to queue.

I could have spent all day here, since there was so much stuff to learn at the Churchill Museum alone. I never knew that he was taken captive during the Boer War, and managed to escape with nothing but a revolver and the clothes on his back! Plus, there's an excellent interactive timeline of Churchill's life with some very, very cool multimedia graphics that I've never seen before in any museum. Very, very well made.

The Cabinet War Rooms were interesting, but the highlight of my visit was definitely the Winston Churchill Museum. This is a cant-miss attraction in London.
