Overated and needs modernsation....
I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. The Dinosaur fossils are good, and the anamatronic T-Rex is cool too, but the rest all seems very crammed into really small areas. It makes it hard to get around and stand by anything long enough to get involved.
The gents toilets STANK and the temperature anywhere other than the main hall was too warm. I would have been happier to have paid a few quid to get in and have this corrected.
blinking fantastic
the venue was very popular but queuing for 20mins was well worth it.My kids are 4 and 7 .we saw the dinosaur bit first and glad we did as at lunchtime there was a 45min wait.. They loved the human biology bit and actually loved it ALL!! very very very good! worth another trip next yr! the only bit i did think was not so good was the toilets..i only found a small amount of loos in the middle of the building..lots of directions to toilets but only appeared to be one lot! NOT good..in the end my 4yr old and nearing wetting himself..i let him wee in a empty bottle as 15mins queuing for the loo for a 4 yr old is NO good!
A great family day out
This Museum is a great family day out and you need to allow a day to do it all. There is so much to see and it is always really busy.
You can go in the front way or there is a door at the side of the building (on the right) and this entrance we went straight in. At the front people were waiting at least 40 minutes.
It is really hot in there, so try not to go in layers of clothes, it is just because so many people are in there at one time.
It is free to get in and I would advise anyone to buy a programme, as this shows you what way to walk around the Museum.
The only comment I would make is that some people were really struggling with prams and pushchairs, just trying to get through the crowds, also there are a lot of stairs.
Some interesting exhibits but could use some modernization!
I visited the Natural History Museum by myself in March 2009. I enjoyed some things, but other exhibits seemed a little out dated. There were lots of digital displays in some sections instead of real artifacts, which I would have preferred. Since it's free, I'd definitely recommend popping in for a few hours, but you can see all the highlights in 2-3 hours. I'd recommend seeing the giant sloth skeleton, blue whale, dinosaurs, sequoia tree cutting, and exhibit on illusions. The building itself is a sight to behold and perhaps my favorite in London.
Awesome
This museum is utterly awesome. It is HUGE, my husband declared we could have easily spent two weeks in there rather than 4 hours. How anyone can NOT find something in there of interest is an absolute mystery! I have no interest in war, so I didn't go to the Imperial War Museum. I'm an environmental scientist, so I DID go to the Natural History Museum, and it's fabulous. There is a such a bredth of ground covered that there SHOULD be something for everyone, unless you go in with the wrong attitude. The only let-down was the marine invertebrate section which was woefully inadequate. Even the building is amazing and I feel probably overlooked since the exhibitions are so good! The food and cafes weren't amazing but that is not what museums are about, and since it is central London and entry is free, there's nothing to stop you going out for food then back in again. And therein was another surprise - it was totally free. Our family could have easily gone in there every day for a fortnight and it still wouldn't have cost us anything. I only wish my two young girls were as interested in it all as I was. I don't think I have every been to such a good museum, and that's not because I live regionally in Queensland, because I'm a Brit in Oz who's visited plenty of British museums etc before.
Our snacks at the cafe may have been quite pricey, but the museum was free for goodness sake, and they do provide picnic spots too so there's no obligation to buy at all.
